By Harold Vaughan
Friendship is rare. Scripture reminds us, A friend loves at all times –Proverbs 17:17. Not sometimes. Not when convenient. At all times.
Here are clear markers to help you discern who your true friends really are:
- They defend you in your absence.
Anyone can smile in your presence. A real friend guards your name when you’re not in the room. - They rejoice when you succeed.
Envy competes. Friendship celebrates. - They remain steady in adversity.
Fair-weather companions disappear when storms roll in. True friends anchor down. - They call you higher, not lower.
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17). Real friends refine you. - They are consistent over time.
Loyalty is proven in longevity. - They share your core values.
“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3). Alignment sustains friendship. - They tell you the truth—even when it stings.
“Faithful are the wounds of a friend” (Proverbs 27:6). Flatterers comfort your ego. Friends strengthen your character.
In the end, true friendship is not about proximity—it is about loyalty, honesty, and shared convictions.
When you have two or three really good friends, you are rich indeed. You will make friends by being friendly. Take a genuine interest in people. Encourage and support them. Assist them when you’re able.
Develop friendships that make you holier, wiser, and stronger. And strive to be that kind of friend yourself.
