The Dwelling Place of God: Praise is His Address

By Harold VaughanHarold Vaughan

“But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.” Psalm 22:3

If you’re longing to encounter God, praise is the pathway to His presence. The Bible reveals a profound truth: God dwells in the praises of His people.

Praise is more than a song or a moment—it’s God’s address, His divine dwelling place.

When we offer heartfelt praise, we step into the very space where the Triune God resides, surrounded by unceasing adoration.

Imagine praise as the key that unlocks the door to God’s sacred courts. Psalm 100:4 declares, “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. . . ” Literally, it speaks of heaven’s throne room. These courts are like a holy garden, a sanctuary where God’s presence reigns. Praise is not just a suggestion; it’s the prescribed way to approach Him. It aligns our hearts with His kingship, welcoming His rule and authority. This shift in focus—from our circumstances to His glory—sets the stage for His will to unfold in our lives.

When we begin with praise instead of petitions, something remarkable happens. Our gaze lifts from the weight of our problems to the majesty of our God. Too often, we fixate on our circumstances, giving God only a fleeting glance. But when we fix our eyes on Him, our challenges shrink in comparison. In these turbulent times, gazing on God through praise reorients our perspective and anchors our faith.

The Power of Drawing Near

The Bible promises that when we draw near to God, He draws near to us (James 4:8). Praise is a powerful act of drawing near, an invitation for God to meet us in a tangible way. Every step we take toward Him through worship is met with His movement toward us. And when He draws near, transformation happens.

In the Old Testament, the sacrificial system governed access to God’s presence. But Christ’s finished work on the cross tore the veil and opened the way. While those sacrifices are obsolete, thanksgiving and praise remain timeless. They are the currency of heaven, never outdated and always accepted. Through praise, we enter the same courts where angels and elders worship the Lamb.

A Glimpse of Heaven’s Worship

The Book of Revelation pulls back the curtain on heaven’s throne room, where worship is the heartbeat of eternity. John, exiled on Patmos, witnessed a breathtaking scene: “I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing (Revelation 5:11–12).” Heaven resounds with relentless praise, a symphony of adoration for the enthroned Lamb.

This celestial worship is no quiet affair. It’s not a soothing harp melody or a somber organ recital. Heaven’s praise is vibrant, unbridled and intense—a roaring anthem to the Lamb who is worthy.

If we’re unaccustomed to fervent worship here on earth, heaven might feel like a shock!

But we can prepare now by cultivating a lifestyle of passionate praise. While we’re on earth, we have the privilege of entering God’s courts daily through worship, joining the eternal song that echoes in paradise.

Praise Changes Everything

Praise does more than connect us to God; it transforms us. It shifts our focus from what we lack to who He is. It reminds us that the God who inhabits our praises is holy, sovereign and near. As we lift our voices, we create an atmosphere where His presence can dwell, bringing peace, strength and clarity to our lives.

Today, let’s commit to entering His courts with praise. Let’s fix our gaze on Him, allowing our problems to fade into the background. As we worship, we step into God’s residence—the place where heaven meets earth, and His glory changes everything. Remember this: God’s address is found in your worship. Step into His presence and let your praise unlock the courts of heaven.

Praise Basics: Where, Why, How & Who We Should Praise

Praise plays a dominant role throughout the entire Bible. In the book of Psalms alone, the word “praise” appears 214 times.
